After President Harry Truman declared victory over Japan, many spontaneous celebrations sprouted up. The picture captures a moment during the celebration in Times Square that defines the joy and relief over the end of the war. Photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt wrote in his book: “I saw a sailor running along the street grabbing any and every girl in sight. Whether she was a grandmother, stout, thin, old, didn't make a difference.” The picture became the most emblematic photo of the era.
