Cascamorras. Baza, Spain

The rival Andalusian towns of Baza and Guadix battle it out each year on September 6 to commemorate the discovery of a statue of Our Lady of Mercy near the town of Baza and the struggle that ensued between the neighboring towns for possession of the virgin and their reconciliation. The townspeople grease themselves up and reenact the stealing of the statue by Cascamorras, the Guadix native that discovered the statue over 500 years ago and whose name crowns this celebration.
